I could go on about the problems with the 50TWs for hours, the 80s arent too bad. But even with the 80s we have had problems with the drags not working over the full arc(2cm between freespool and full drag), ratchets disengaging, drags varing during the fight, uneven warped drag plates etc. However I sent then to Steve Angus at Swordfish marine and he machined the drag plates, rebuilt the drags. Since then(4seasons ago and probably an average of 20marlin per reel) they have been perfect, havent needed to touch the drags. If only they came out of the factory like that. Shimanos tend to be perfect out of the box. Having said that, ours are between 12-20years old, and still look near new, very good anodizing on them unlike the Shimanos. If buying second hand then a Penn would be fine after a visit to Steve, if buying new Id go for Shimano. Lethal Eric Morman yep agree Adam, i worked for Penn (TWL importers) for 11years and we had some problems with drags, the firm that owns Penn USA now have sorted most of the problems out they are very dedicated fishermen and listen to what is been said about the product and quickly rectified it...
